yes i agree with monkeys mom this is probably the only project that would actually improve an area for the whole community.
with a better town centre burntwood would attract the better shops that we so desparatley need (like a decent clothes shop), and maybe yes tesco could offer some of the money as they have a vested interest in that area. i think that having 2 neighbouring supermarkets will be good for our wallets as morrisons has had a monopoly for to long.

Humble pie for me re:LDC as this is a very worthy project, especially the town square. Though now I’m dreaming of a town square, with the SCAMP statue, Brindley Place-esque fountains and a horseshoe of bars and restaurants. Maybe Tesco would pay for it if they got the superstore they clearly want (not that we need it).

I agree with this project as Burntwood town centre needs investment to improve facilities. This project also benefits all of the community

Objective: To deliver environmental Improvements at a number of sites across Burntwood town centre.  The improvements will build on the success of a phased programme of works which commenced during 2000.

Current Situation: Burntwood town centre between 2000 and 2006 received public investment to deliver improvements to the highway and public realm.  There is now a significant contrast between the appearance of these areas and the remaining sites, including pavements, shop forecourts and car parks, which did not benefit from this earlier investment.

In response to this situation Lichfield District Council has recently completed a design and cost estimate exercise in partnership with landscape consultants to develop designs to improve the public realm at a number of sites throughout Burntwood town centre.

The design set out a broad public realm framework, considering different types of treatments for shop forecourts and car parks throughout town.

In summary, this next phase of proposed works focuses on the gateway/entrance points, paving works and car park areas servicing the town centre and also includes investigating the opportunity to create a central square to the side of the Tesco Metro Store.

In summary the first three phases of improvements focused on the following priorities.

  • Measures to reduction vehicle speeds and mitigate against driver impatience in order to reduce the risk of pedestrians from vehicles crossing footways.
  • Improvements included, resurfacing and levelling of carriageway and footpaths, rationalisation of parking bays and traffic calming measures.
  • Improvements to the streetscene to enhance local identity and improve security.
  • Measures included replacement of existing furniture and features, new street trees and upgraded lighting
